Pushrod Tech

At least once a month somebody comes in asking how to adjust their pushrods. On late model Harleys the lifter has about .200" travel. So what I do is get the cam on the base circle(lifter down), adjust the pushrod so it is snug between the lifter and rocker arm cup. Now put your jam nut up against the pushrod and start lengthening making sure the jam nut travels with the threaded portion of the pushrod. A gap develops, keep lengthening until you can slip a 6R12 spark plug strap thru the gap. You just went .105" deep in the lifter. Tighten your jam nut and wait for the lifter to bleed until you can spin the pushrod with your finger. Now move to the next. This way you dont have to worry about "whos brand" pushrod you are using and what threads per inch they are.

Shoehorn? Or is this the wrong season to be picking up projects?

25 Years of Donnie Smith

This show is always neat in the respect that there is a little something for everyone. Full customs, Baggers, Choppers, Old Stuff, Sport Bikes, RatBikes, Girls Bikes, whatever. The people watching is pretty cool too.

There was some neat local history to capture too. Donnie had a bunch of old pictures & memorabilia in his booth. Tom Fugle had his panhead there which I hadn't seen in person. That picture of those 9 guys from North Dakota on their bikes in front of the same building, 50 years apart from each other. Just imagine all the places their lives & motorcycles have taken them.

As always if you had a big enough wad of cash at the swap meet you could have bought up enough parts to build yourself a bike. Flathead, knuckle, pans, shovels and on up.

Braaap

Picked up these megaphones from a place called Cone Engineering in Cali. 304 Stainless nice and light with a baffle built in. I suck at welding but they feel pretty solid. Will need to make a bracket yet to brace them. Took it out and the sound is exactly what I wanted and they sure make the bike feel quicker over the open head pipes.

Fun For All Ages

The weather has been unreal for this time of year in Minnesota, upper 70's all week. Throck and I put on about 200 miles this weekend, going all over, doing all kinds of neat stuff. He is only 5 so this is the first time I have ventured out of town with him on two wheels. He seems to like it though and does a real good job on the bike. I remember some of my first rides with my dad, probably around this age & it makes me wonder if he will remember these?

Before and after.

Swapped out the square shovel swingarm for a classic, round pan swingarm. Lowers the bike and adds some class to it.

Make Lemonade

When life gives you dirty carburetors, boil them in lemon juice. You can dilute it with some water, but be careful if your carb is polished, as it will dull the finish.

Moving right along.

Made a little progress on Courtney's bike over the last couple nights. Bought all the rest of the parts I should need for it to run. Have a whole $400 into the old girl with the cost of the bike. Nice to work with the garage door open!
